2000 Ferrari 550 Maranello

Vehicle Description

The 550 Maranello marked Ferrari's return to producing a front-V12 engine two-seat Berlinetta, as president Luca di Montezemelo wanted a more useable and driveable flagship model. Gone were the flat-12's of the 70's & 80's, Ferrari was going back to their roots of a super-GT. Unveiled to the public in July 1996 it quickly became yet another sales success, often referred to as the 'Daytona of the Nineties' and remains as desirable. The 550 is a ‘modern classic’ GT that is powerful, elegant and comfortable, and exemplifies the best of Maranello as its name suggests.

Powering the 550 is the F133A, a 48 valve quad-cam V12 producing 485hp and 419 lb/ft torque. A variable length intake optimizes power across the rev-range offering a very refined driving experience with . The handling is really a standout, hydraulically assisted steering is dictated by road speed so the feel and texture through the wheel is quality. Featuring a transaxle layout the all sycromesh 6-speed gearbox offers a tractable and smooth delivery of power. Ferrari got things right with the 550 lapping the famed Fiorano test circuit 3 seconds quicker than the 512M it replaced. In 1998, a slightly modified 550 set three world speed records at the Transportation Research Centre in Ohio. The near perfect 50/50 weight distribution and reliability also set it up well for endurance racing, with the 550 Maranello Prodrive winning the LMGT2 class at Le Mans in 2004.
