1979 Ferrari 308 GT4

Vehicle Description

We are delighted to offer this superb factory right hand drive 1979 Ferrari 308 GT4. Finished in the desirable Rosso Chiaro with black seats and black carpets, the 308 GT4 is one of the best kept secrets of classic Ferrari’s and this example can only be described as ‘an incredible time capsule’.

The 308 GT4 made its first public appearance at the 1973 Paris Motor Show and production started shortly thereafter. Like the 246 Dino, the 308 GT4 carried only ‘Dino’ badges throughout the first few years of production. This was a groundbreaking model for Ferrari in many ways, the first Ferrari to be powered by a transversely mounted V8 engine and the first Ferrari designed by Bertone. It was a great success for Ferrari and almost 3,000 examples were built over six years of production until 1979.

With 2 keepers in the last 30 years this car was owned previously by Ferrari Owners Club Concours judge. It has won and achieved runner up in its class at the Owners Club National Concours. While in his loving ownership the engine had hundreds of hours spent on it, with full engine rebuild and unleaded conversion plus the addition of modern light weight pistons. As part of a personal collection since 2011 there is no doubt the current owner continued to maintain the car to the highest level including overhauling brakes, clutch, hoses etc with the majority of work by Barr-Tech in Cambridge to maintain its mechanical and cosmetic order. It had regular but little use amounting to between 250-1,000 miles per year. The engine bay is very clean and has been subject to a recent (March 2021) full mechanical overhaul, service and cam-belt renewal. Another important fact it has the concours correct and impossible to source Carello wipers still installed.

Registered new 16/11/1979, this 308 GT4 - chassis number 15024, is accompanied by an enormous and comprehensive history file containing a wealth of supporting documents for services, cam-belt renewals, maintenance and previous MOTs corroborating the 62,847 miles on the odometer today. There is correspondence in the file displaying the sale of the car between previous owners. The car is complete with its original tool kit, dash torch kit, wallet, handbooks and 2 sets of keys. Currently on 16” wheels however the original 14” wheel chromodoras are in storage.

The colour combination really enhances the beautiful Bertone designed bodywork and the interior shows very little sign of wear.  The external trim, chrome, wheels and the glass are also in very good condition. Importantly the foam in the seats remains firm and supportive and carpets show minimum use. The dash and all instruments/controls are also in excellent condition. The original radio is still available.

The Dino is practical, it has a reasonable sized boot and the rear seats provide additional space. The Iconic shape has aged gracefully and the renewed interest in the 308 GT4 has been reflected in the way prices have begun to appreciate in recent years.

Available to view at our Brands Hatch Circuit showroom just outside of London, additional photographs and video walk-round available on request.
