Foskers Restoration Projects

Sympathetic project on renowned model

In November 2009 Foskers ventured across the English Channel to Paris. We were to collect a 1964, 1 owner, 250 Lusso which belonged to a parisian diplomate. This extraordinary car had just been purchased by a highly regarded client and family friend who was keen to add this model to his collection of cars.

In January 2010 a sympathetic restoration process was meticulously planned with orginality paramount to the project. As February arrived the Lusso was brought into the restoratation bay and the stripping process began.

With all the major units and trims removed it was obvious that this was a very special car, history was unfolding in front of us, “this car had never been touched, everything was original”

The focus of the project had to be very carefully managed as over restoring this car would ruin the originality and charm of this Lusso.

Every item was photographed and itemised as this car was going to be rebuilt with all of its original nuts, bolts and fittings. As trims were removed every item still had its original factory number stamp on it, this car was totally original in every way.

The decision was made to carry out a bare metal respray, due to some areas of paintwork that had been repaired in the past. Knowing the car had spent its life in amongst the chaotic Paris traffic, it was thought that minor bumps had been the reason for areas of paint repairs.

As the paint shop team discovered the body was perfect and under the original layers of paint there was barely any rust at all. The repaired areas showed a small graze or handle bar type mark on one side and a small scratch on the other both of which had not damaged the metal and were scratches in the paint, not bad for a car of 46 years.

Due to the nature of the car we have involved Ferrari Classiche in the project and started to trace history on the car, with the original colour of Rosso Cina confirmed the paint process could begin.

Whilst the body was in the care of the paint shop, Ian started painstakingly going through all of the boxes with decisions being made on chrome and other finishes that were required. Other areas of treatment needed was the engine and axle assembles, whilst there were no real problems with these components they were both leaking large amounts of oil due to old perished seals and gaskets. Total rebuilds were the only answer as Ian started this very rewarding work.

As the body returned, rebuilding history could take place.
