Sometimes coming to work is a real pleasure; Tuesday 8th September was one of those days!
The morning began with a phone call from Mr Piper asking if we could prepare the 365P and 330P for collection later that morning. After some time spent charging batteries and changing spark plugs both cars were fired up in to life outside Foskers at the paddock entrance to Brands Hatch.
The cars were to be loaded and transported to the Goodwood Revival, however before loading David suggested we take them for a spin down the lanes behind Brands Hatch and what a sight to behold a 365P and 330P on the open road. I was fortunate to be the co driver armed with a fire extinguisher and trade plate. Any one interested in 60’s sports racers simply must attend the Goodwood Revival and see these two cars in action they really are breath taking.
Built in 1964 and run by Scuderia Ferrari, the 365P’s first outing was at the Bridgehampton 500KM race in September 64\\\' driven by works driver Ludovico Scarfiotti. Having retired from the race, Scarfiotti enjoyed a more successful drive a week later at Canadian GP at Mosport, scoring a 2nd overall.
In January 1965, the car was sold to Scuderia Fillipinetti who ran the car at the pre-qualifying of Le Mans in April, where Tommy Spychiger scored 6th overall behind the works cars. The car was then entered into the 1000KM Monza with Herbert Mueller and Spychinger sharing the drive. Mueller drove first and set a great pace, finally pitting to re-fuel and swap drivers. Spychiger roared out of the pits and onto the circuit, approaching the Parabolica at great speed he lost the brakes and crashed the car, the fuel tanks ignited and he was killed in the incident.
The car lay dormant at Georges Fillipinetti castle for some years after and was sold to French Ferrari collector Pierre Bardinon of the Mas Du Clos Collection.
Mr Piper purchased the car from Bardinon some years later and restored the car to original specification. Today the car is as it left the factory, campaigned regularly by Mr Piper and a regular entrant at Goodwood amongst many other historic events.
We were proud to have this historic Ferrari on display as part of Foskers 40th anniversary celebrations.
