After the guys in the race department finished preparing the 456 race car at 2.30 Thursday morning it was hurriedly loaded onto our lorry to catch a ferry to Holland at 6.15 that morning. With little or no sleep for the team and driver the thought of turning up to race at Spa seemed a little daunting to say the least. For our trusty driver Paul Brooks it was going to be even more daunting having never visited Spa Francorchamps before.
After qualifying he commented that he wasn’t sure whether to turn left or right at the end of the straights!!!!!!!! In brief things didn’t look that good, imagine our surprise when the times came in and team Foskers qualified with a respectable lap time of 2.58. Rest assured we celebrated in true Foskers style back at the hotel that evening. Saturday saw us 10th on the grid and in spite of a blocked start a 3rd place in our amalgamated class amongst the 355 Challenge cars. Day 2 and the 2nd race was a completely different game, torrential rain and thunder meant Paul’s first outing in a V12 front engine race car and his face said it all! Inspite of his fears and the added problem of a failed wiper motor remarkably Paul managed to keep her on the tarmac and miss the spinning 360, 355 and 328 to take another 3rd and even more surprising a fantastic 7th overall in the Open class. After a glass or two of champagne Paul was awarded two trophies for his achievements. In all a fantastic weekends racing on the truly wonderful historic Spa Francorchamps circuit and all superbly organised by John and Anne Swift, our competition secretaries.
